True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack sewing pattern and detailed instructions: you’ll find it here!
My daughter really likes ‘True’ and she loves to dress up. Unfortunately I could not find any ‘True’ toys or costumes (or only expensive ones), so I decided to make my own. You can quite easily find a white shirt and a pink skirt. Even the striped socks and yellow wellies were doable. But the backpack is unique to the theme, so it needs to be made. Or bought. I prefer made.
As you’re reading this, I think we’re on the same page. You’d also like to construct True’s backpack. You came to the right place.

True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack: the pattern
I drew a pattern as accurately as I could, taking into account seam allowances, etc (I’m a graphic designer) and made the backpack from scratch. I made notes along the way and took loads of pictures. Thank goodness it turned out well, and, more importantly, my daughter was super pleased with it! So with the ‘thumbs up’ from the expert I’m re-telling the construction story, so you can follow the instructions step-by-step and have a ‘True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack’ when you finish.
Can you make this backpack? Short answer: Yes. I’d say any sew-stress at intermediate level is able to make this. If you can sew a zippered pouch, you will be able to make this backpack.
If I can do it, you can do it. Promise.
True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack sewing pattern instructions
I’d like to start with small and friendly disclaimer
I’m not a sewing wizard, but I’ve made my fair share of toys and clothes to confidently put together a sewing pattern and tutorial.
I have been sewing for 10 years and made plenty of bags, pouches, tipis, throw pillows, pants, tea cosies, gym bags, banners, cosmetic bags, stuffed toys, jackets, messenger bags, sleeping bags and doll carriers, and I learnt a lot of tricks along the way. I described these tips & tricks at every relevant stage of the True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack sewing tutorial.
Note on Materials
The backpack that I constructed was made from fleece. I like the soft feel. Fleece however is also floppy by nature. If you prefer a more sturdy backpack you may want to use a different type of fabric, such as cotton (combined with interfacing) or canvas.
Having said that, my daughter was absolutely thrilled with the True and the Rainbow Kingdom backpack. She loved the soft feel and fluffiness of it and is completely content. And anyway, as soon as you fill up the backpack with wishes (or anything voluminous) it will easily retain its shape.
The rucksack has 3 separate pockets to store wishes!
